As remote work continues to reshape the global workforce, many countries are introducing specialized residency programs to attract digital professionals, entrepreneurs and freelancers. Sri Lanka’s Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) is one such initiative, designed to welcome foreign professionals who work remotely for overseas companies or clients while enjoying the country’s vibrant culture, tropical climate, and growing digital infrastructure. By allowing eligible individuals to legally reside in Sri Lanka while maintaining foreign income sources, the program positions the country as an emerging hub for location-independent professionals.
The Digital NomadVisa is available to foreign nationals aged 18 or older, including the spouse and dependents of the primary applicant. To qualify, the main applicant must be engaged in remote employment, freelancing or operating a business serving clients outside Sri Lanka. In addition, applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of USD 2,000, with an additional USD 500 per month required for each dependent beyond two family members. This requirement ensures that participants maintain financial independence while contributing to the local economy through living expenses and tourism activity.
Applicants must submit several supporting documents as part of the visa application process. These typically include a completed visa application form, passport copy valid for at least six months, recent passport photographs, security clearance documentation, medical clearance report, and a police clearance certificate issued within the last three months. Applicants travelling with family members must also provide marriage certificates and birth certificates for dependents, along with international health insurance covering medical care in Sri Lanka and proof of the required monthly remittance income.
The visa issuance process is generally conducted through the Department of Immigration and Emigration – Residence Visa Division. The procedure begins with the submission of the required documentation, followed by an official evaluation of eligibility and compliance requirements. Once approved, the Digital Nomad Visa endorsement is issued directly in the applicant’s passport, granting them legal residency rights under the program.
The Digital Nomad Visa is initially granted for a period of one year and may be renewed annually, provided the applicant continues to meet the eligibility criteria. Visa holders are permitted to open bank accounts, rent property, access local telecommunications and utility services, and enroll dependent children in international or private schools. However, participants must ensure that all income is derived from foreign sources, as the visa does not permit employment within Sri Lanka.
